The Monument

The Monument

422 Vernon Street, Nelson, BC

Artist: John Mckinnon (Nelson, BC) Year: 1984.

This is one of four stone sculptures commissioned for the City of Nelson. They were carved from local marble, and the themes varied to fit the destinations of the finished pieces. The pyramidal form of this sculpture represents some of the elements that represent social structure of our society. The eagle with the scroll dominates the composition and represents the governing authority, while the cherubic figures below play tag, oblivious to, or uninterested in the hierarchical order, yet in this composition, these figures compose the visual supporting mass of the Sculpture, just as the people create the supporting structure of our society. The piece sits in the area of the city that is dominated by the Courthouse, The City Hall, a Bank and a Hotel.
